Mikuni’s interests shifted from abstract to concrete; things that could be made by hand; things with stories behind them. Enlisting the help of craftsmen, he launched a design and production company called “Brutal Works” (Later changed to “Like Atmosphere”). In 2007, Mikuni took a step onto the international fashion design front with his participation in Paris collection week. His, what could at the time be described as “quiet and nervous,” designs received recognition in a report by a local fashion magazine. Like Atmosphere designs have a simple, yet complex feel to them. While the nature of the style is characterized by sophistication, refinement, and slightly-strained minimalism, one can also strongly sense an air of rock and hip hop influences. The impression is abstract but sharp. This strong impression can be likened to the sound of a guitar’s distortion, after having removed all other sounds in a rock music piece.
Like Atmosphere designs closely reflect Mikuni’s sense of values and aesthetic beauty. In his words, the designs do not just provide an ornamental surface. Rather, they serve as things more true to their intrinsic and substantial nature. By basing his designs on these spiritual and abstract concepts, the designer is able to come up with symbolic and simple pieces. This, combined with careful attention to small details, results in truly unique conceptions and creations.
We instantly fell in love with his concept. It has a clear rock’n’roll edge, but are still very discrete. Perfect combination and amazing Japanese quality. We now represent Like Atmosphere in Scandinavia.
In the Spring 2011 we introduce the new collection “Buttons” from Like Atmosphere inspired from old vintage buttons created in oxidized sterling silver and brass.
